Stainless Steel 310S Properties

Stainless Steel 310S is an austenitic grade of stainless steel that offers excellent resistance to high-temperature oxidation and corrosion. It is one of the most sought-after materials in industries that demand superior performance under extreme conditions, such as chemical processing, power generation, and petrochemicals. Ferrobend, a leading manufacturer and supplier of stainless steel products, has built a reputation for delivering high-quality, reliable, and cost-effective solutions to meet the demands of a diverse range of applications. Stainless Steel 310S manufactured by Ferrobend, and explain why it is the preferred choice for a variety of industrial sectors. Stainless Steel 310S is a low-carbon variant of the 310 grade, designed to offer superior oxidation resistance at higher temperatures. It contains a combination of chromium (25-30%) and nickel (19-22%), making it resistant to corrosion in a variety of aggressive environments. The low carbon content in 310S reduces the risk of carbide precipitation and enhances the alloy’s resistance to stress corrosion cracking.

The primary feature that differentiates 310S from other stainless steel grades is its ability to withstand elevated temperatures without compromising on strength and oxidation resistance. This makes it particularly suitable for high-temperature applications in industries such as petrochemical processing, heat exchangers, and furnace components.

Ferrobend is committed to providing the highest quality stainless steel products to meet the rigorous demands of industrial clients. Heat Resistance:

  • Good oxidation resistance at temperatures up to 1700oF (927 oC)
  • Continuous use at temperatures above 1400oF (760oC) is not usually recommended due to carbide precipitation which can lead to irregular scaling
  • Does not have a low carbon content so it is also vulnerable to sensitization

Welding Characteristics:

  • Not generally recommended, but may be welded with some difficulty
  • May be welded with Alloy 310 electrodes
  • Should be annealed after welding to re-dissolve precipitated carbides

Machinability:

  • High machining rates can be obtained in the annealed condition with hardness in the range of 200 to 240 Brinell
  • Will work harden; therefore, it should be machined at reduced surface feet per minute and heavier feeds to prevent glazing at the tool interface.

Applications:

  • Nuts and bolts
  • Aircraft fittings
  • Gears
  • Screws
  • Shafts
  • Electrical switchgear components
  • Bushings
